Getting Legally Married in Bali: What You Need to Know
Legal ceremony, symbolic ceremony, or paperwork at home first. The three routes to a Bali wedding and what each one involves.
Most couples marrying in Bali choose between three routes, and the right one depends on how much paperwork you want to handle abroad.
The first route is a fully legal wedding in Indonesia. Indonesian law requires a religious ceremony conducted by an authorised celebrant of a recognised religion, followed by civil registration. Both partners generally need valid passports, birth certificates, a certificate of no impediment from their consulate, and passport photos, with documents translated by a sworn translator. Requirements vary by nationality and religion, so allow several weeks for preparation and use a planner or agency that handles legal weddings regularly.
The second route, and the most popular one, is the symbolic ceremony. You complete the legal paperwork at home, usually a short registry office appointment before you travel, and then hold the full ceremony in Bali with no legal formalities attached. Every venue in our directory hosts symbolic ceremonies, and your celebrant can design the ceremony exactly as you want it. Guests rarely know or care that the legal signature happened elsewhere.
The third route is a vow renewal, which works the same way as a symbolic ceremony and suits couples celebrating an anniversary or eloping years after the paperwork.
If you do want the marriage legally registered in Indonesia, tell your venue and planner at the very start. It affects the celebrant, the schedule, and sometimes the venue itself, since the religious ceremony has its own requirements.
Whichever route you choose, confirm how your home country recognises the marriage. Most countries accept an Indonesian marriage certificate once it is legalised, but the process differs, and your consulate is the reliable source of truth.
